Condition: Excellent, no splits or damage. Wear to silverplate from cleaning, with copper showing through.
Description: A magnificent Elkington plate embossed wall plaque, depicting a scene from Shakespeare's "Merchant of Venice", designed by Leonard Morel-Ladeuil in 1885. The plaque is chased and embossed with the trial scene from the Merchant of Venice, with Shylock wielding his knife to extract "a pound of flesh" from Antonio, in front of the seated Doge. The detail is fantastic, this truly is the work of a master craftsman. The plaque is silver plate on copper, as can be seen from the photographs some copper is showing through from polishing, which accentuates the picture. The frame is also lovely, with profile of Shakespeare supported by 2 putti holding a wreath, the sides have sworda and balance scales, and the 4 corners have different characters. The plaque is mounted on it's original wooden base, we believe oak. The plaque is fully hallmarked, firstly makers mark "E&Co" (under crown), "E & CO", and date letter "A" for 1866. On the other side it is hallmarked "ELKINGTON & CO, 1312", and registration number "RD 47656".
