Description: A rare set of 6 Victorian silver dessert forks, in a pattern of an unknown name that is not recoded in the book Silver Flatware by Ian Pickford (a book we highly recommend). The pattern is derived from Kings pattern, but with a small shell at the top, and has a series of scrolls around an architectural feature, and a very intricate heel where the handle joins the tines. It is similar in style to both the Albert and Victoria patterns. It is also similar to another "Pattern of Unknown Name", recorded by Pickford on page 151, Figure 239, which Pickford describes as "French inspired mid-nineteenth century pattern, the design registered in 1852, many features similar to the Albert Pattern", this pattern is also by Hayne & Cater. The forks are double struck, no engraving is present, and the quality and condition is very pleasing. All 6 forks are clearly hallmarked, with some wear to some of the makers marks. All 6 forks are also stamped with the British Registry design number and date chart diamond, which rarely occurs on silver flatware - class I for metal, date letter D for 1852, and letter B for October visible on some of them, partial wear on some of the diamonds. The business of Hayne & Cater was established in 1758 by Thomas Wallis, who was succeeded by his son (also Thomas). Jonathan Hayne (father of Samuel) then joined, Samuel joined his father in 1836, then Dudley Cater (a former apprentice) joined in 1848. Hayne and Cater clearly prospered, as they supplied many leading retailers and have left behind some impressive silver. The business was declared bankrupt in 1865 after Cater retired in 1864. This particular unknown pattern is clearly a rare pattern, we have only been able to trace 2 other examples of it (including an impressive soup ladle on the Tim Spearing website). Given we know that Hayne and Cater registered 2 new flatware designs in 1852, we assume they planned to expand their business by introducing innovative designs. Unfortunately it appears that the designs were not a success, as they were only produced for a very short period (1853), and very few examples are known today, so we can assume very few were made.
