Description: An late Georgian silver flat chased escutcheon shaped wine label, engraved for PORT-WINE, by Rawlings & Summers, this label is a later replica of wine labels produced by Louis Hamon 1739-1750. The label is the standard escutcheon shape, with curves, horns on the top and an ogee shape to the base. It is flat chased by hand, with a pattern of vine leaves, grapes and tendrils, with PORT-WINE engraved in large letters. The original chain has a hook at one end, an early feature which allowed the chain to be undone for hooking around a decanter. The label is struck with 3 hallmarks, all well struck and clear, these include makers mark CR over WS, lion passant and William IV duty mark. Charles Rawlings & William Summers worked between 1829-1861, they were noted for good quality snuff boxes, wine labels and other small items. This wine label was aquired with 2 very similar labels by Louis Hamon (S 11614 and S11615), it appears to be a direct copy, but small differences (size of grapes) can be seen, so we assume it was made to match the Hamon pair.
