Description: A Indian Colonial silver dessert spoon and fork in the Fiddle, Thread & Shell pattern, made by Twentyman & Co. in Calcutta. They have quite a colonial feel, the quality is on the poorer side, and they have signs of wear. They are single struck, and have not been engraved. Both are hallmarked with makers mark T&Co, pseudo lion passant and an indistinct tally mark, the hallmarks are clear but slightly blurred, so probably struck with worn punches. Twentyman & Co. was founded in 1818 by William Henry Twentyman, the business went bust in 1853. William Twentyman arrived in India in 1810 aged 17, and was apprenticed to his uncle John Hunt. The busines was clearly successful in the early days, they produced a range of items, Twentyman was also a founder member of the Calcutta Trade Association. He was joined by his son William John Twentyman in 1838, he inherited the business in 1842 on the death of his father. William John Twentyman left the business in 1846 to become a teacher, and was jailed for debt in the Calcutta common jail in 1847 (Source Makers of Indian Colonial Silver, Wynyard Wilkinson, page 199). A similar spoon can be seen in the book Indian Colonial Silver, also by Wilkinson, page 144.
