An Arts & Crafts silver vase stand, made by William Hutton & Sons in 1901, and designed by Kate Harris. The vase holder is cylindrical, with six stylised flower heads angled out of the cylinder, and 3 long pad feet with stylised leaf, and crenulated top. This would have originally contained a Powell green glass vase, unfortunately now missing. The vase is clearly hallmarked with makera mark and London 1901 hallmarks, above registration design mark "Rd 372480". "Kate Harris was Hutton’s leading designer c 1898-1904, based in their London studio, and is famous for her distinctive British art nouveau style". - Source Peartree Collection, which we highly recommend. A Chinese Export silver dessert spoon in the Fiddle pattern, by a rare unidentified maker who used a letter E makers mark. The spoon has original owners engraved initial (I or Y) in Gothic script. The hallmarks are very clear, and include a very distinctive pseudo lion passant without tail, makers mark E with a very distinctive font, pseudo crowned leopard's head and pseudo duty mark. This mark is depicted in the book "Chinese Export Silver 1785-1885 by Forbes, page 244, figure 235, which are present on an egg set. The maker E worked in the 2nd quarter of the 19th century in Canton.
A pair of Cape silver table forks in the Fiddle pattern, without any engraving. The forks are in excellent condition, they have not seen much use at all. Both forks are clearly hallmarked with makers mark LT and 4 pseudo hallmarks (lion passant, duty mark, date letter a and crowned leopard's head town mark), this is mark 135 in the book Cape Silver by Stephan Welz.
A beautiful and thought provoking pair of German silver sugar tongs, with the words "Zum Andenken" cast into the bow (translated "In Memory Of"). The tongs have 2 distinct parts, the top half has a strip with the words Zum Andenken between highly decorated flowers, surrounded by scrolling filigree work, the detail and amount of work is astounding, the bottom half have pressed acanthus leaves for the arms, with the tong bowls in the shape of hands holding 3 flower buds. The tongs are delicate but are in remarkably good condition, we assume the have been treasured and well looked after. The tongs have 2 hallmarks, a clear 13 for 13 Loth silver (813 grade), this was used before 1886. The second mark is small and distinct but we cannot identify it, possibly an animal head?, we assume it is either a city mark or makers mark. A Cape silver konfyt fork in the Fiddle pattern, with 3 tines. The fork has the original owners initials PJS, quite quaintly engraved in Colonial style.The fork has excellent hallmarks, they could not be better. They include makers mark MLS and the leaf device, with the veins clearly visible (Welz mark 117). Smith was a Dane who arrived in the Cape as a VOC employee in 1757 aged 35, he died in 1806. He led an interesting life, he married 4 times, and had 10 children.
A rare Victorian silver Old English Military Thread and Shell pattern soup ladle, of exceptional weight and quality. The pattern has the regular Thread and Shell pattern, double struck (on both sides), but with scrolls instead of shoulders, as with all Military variants (Pickford, Silver Flatware, page 117). The ladle has an interesting engraved family crest, a collared lion between 2 horns. The hallmarks are very clear, including makers mark GA (George Adams, who took over the Chawner business in 1840), and also includes 2 journeyman's marks S and N (the silversmiths who made the ladle in the Chawner & Co workshop). Ian Pickford, in the book Silver Flatware, describes Old English Military Thread and Shell as "a rare pattern, illustrated in the Chawner & Co. Pattern book(appendix pg 218). Any services and pieces are rare" - page 107. Chawner & Co were the most important firm of silver spoon manufacturers in Victorian England (John Culme, Directory of Gold & Silversmiths, page 82).
A set of 4 Irish Georgian silver tablespoons in the Fiddle pattern, made by Samuel Neville of Dublin. The spoons have no initials or engraving, and no signs of removal. The hallmarks on all 4 spoons are excellent, all individually struck. They include makers mark SN, Hibernia, Crowned Harp and date letter I for 1805. Samuel Neville worked between 1795 and 1851, he was a respected member of the community, he was Warden between 1804 and 1807 and was also elected to the Dublin City Council in 1807. He was Master in 1807 and 1827.
A rare Iona silver scarf ring, in the Celtic Arts and Crafts style. The ring is very good quality, and has a classic Ritchie Viking longship motif, with celtic knotwork side panels, and terminals of wolf like celtic beasts. The ship is copied off an 11th century stone carving in Iona's Abbey museum, and the beasts are similar to those found in the Book of Kells. The hallmarks are very clear, "AR IONA" incuse, along with makers mark ICA (Iona Celtic Arts) and Birmingham hallmarks for 1934. Ritchie registered the ICA makers mark in 1931 in Birmingham. Alex Ritchie's work was inspired by the ancient Celtic and Viking carvings on Iona. He is regarded as one of the most respected and sought after Scottish silver jewellers of the 20th century. Beautiful, solid, engine turned box with vacant cartouche. Excellent hinge and very snug closure. This box is a very good weight and slightly larger than other snuffboxes. Attractive thumbpiece and gilt interior.
An antique Dutch silver vinaigrette (zilveren lodereindoosje) in the form of an armoire (kabinet). These have also been described as pomanders, scent boxes, and also incorrectly described as snuff boxes and peppermint boxes. The box is rectangular in shape, with an engraved armoire, complete with drawers, it also has a pierced rim on the lid. The back is decorated with an engraved flower, while the base, sides and lid have engraved wrigglework decoration. The lid is clearly hallmarked with maker mark IS under star (makers mark 10121 in the book "Netherlands Responsibility Marks since 1797") for Johannes Jacobus Smits, who worked in Schoonhoven between 1823 and 1824. The lid also has a very clear date letter O for 1823. The rim of the box also has makers mark and Minerva head office mark (duty mark). Loderein comes from the French "l'eau de reine" translated "water of the king", as only the wealthy could afford the perfumed cologne.
An interesting set of 4 silver ingots with hallmarks from 4 different assay offices, with an explanatory silver plaque, all in the original box. The box lid reads "The British Hallmark Assay Office Specimen Set" (this is faded and worn but still legible), the interior reads "Mayfair Coin Company London W.I." The plaque reads "The British hallmark is the acknowledged guarantee of quality accepted all over the world. The marks show makers initials, quality, assay office and date. Hallmarks were first used in 1300 A.D. The four British assay offices are: London, Birmingham, Sheffield, Edinburgh". The plaque is also clearly hallmarked for Birmingham 1970, along side set number 282. The four ingots have clear hallmarks (London 1970, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Sheffield 1969), with the name of each assay office underneath the hallmarks. Elegant, plain, oval shaped boat shaped salts with beaded rim, on an oval pedestal. Interiors are gilt. Very clear hallmarks. These are good quality salts by a well regarded maker.
An interesting and beautiful sterling silver small cup, this is a Greek museum replica of the Vapheio Cup, from the Mycenaean period, showing Minoan Bull Leapers (very detailed) being gored by bulls, and a bull captured in a net. The mug shaped cup has a spool handle, securely fastened with 3 pins. The original pair of 2 gold cups have 2 different designs, this design is known as the "Violent Cup", as bulls are stampeded into nets, one escapes, shoving a catcher aside. They are known as "the most perfect works of Mycenean or Minoan Art to have survived" - source Wikipedia. The base is clearly hallmarked "Hand made 925", and the handle is marked "Made in Greece 925". A copy of this cup appeared in the 'Game of Thrones" series, with Tyrion Lannister using it to drink wine. Replicas of Vapheio cups can be found by a variety of Greek, German and English makers. many are brass or silver plate, some are sterling silver, and different sizes exist.
An interesting Georgian silver caddy spoon, with an embossed and engraved bowl, and a bifurcated handle. This is an unusual design, we have not seen anything similar in the literature, including the book "Caddy Spoons an Illustrated Guide" by John Norie. The bowl is circular, with a central embossed shell, with 2 embossed scrolls on either side, and a central engraved oval, finely engraved with flowers, with additional engraving completing the design The top half of the bowl also has additional foliage around the edge. The bifurcated handle has a central shield shaped cartouche for initials or family crest, this has not been engraved, but the rest of the handle has attractive engraving. The spoon is unfortunately quite light and thinly made, and given the bifurcated handle is prone to damage - note our condition report of a previous repair and 2 splits to the bowl. A Cape silver butter knife in the Fiddle pattern, with scimitar shaped blade, and reeded border across the top of the blade. The handle has original owners engraved initials in a fancy script, possibly JCLDLV. The knife has clear Cape silver hallmarks, makers mark W.M for William Moore, and Cape silver stub mark with 4 pseudo hallmarks, lion passant, date letter A, duty mark and leopard's head town mark - see our Cape Stub article in our articles section.
A rare Cape silver tablespoon in the Old English thread pattern, we have only noted 2 examples of Cape silver in this pattern in the body of literature. The spoon is the usual Old English shape, but with a double thread around the edge, this is double struck (occurs on the front and back of the spoon). The spoon is engraved with original owners initials IM in script. The spoon is hallmarked with makers mark IC, the mark is slightly blurred, we assume the punch was worn when it was struck. The spoon is also hallmarked with the "Cape Stub", 4 pseudo - English hallmarks (lion passant, date letter, duty mark and leopard's head) struck mechanically in a fly press (see article on Cape Stub in "The Finial, 2007, and in the articles tab above), these marks have some wear but are still clearly visible. A rare Cape silver tablespoon by unknown maker M.I.V., with a good makers mark. The spoon is Fiddle pattern, in good condition but with wear to the tip from use, and no engraving. The makers mark M.I.V. is fairly well struck but slightly worn, note the specific placing of the dots (first 2 higher than last). This is makers mark 178 in Cape Silver by Welz (page 158), where the specific placing of the dots is clearly illustrated. This mark is also recorded by Heller in Further Researches in Cape Silver Vol. 11, mark N.M.M 56, page 126, also with the unusually placed dots clearly illustrated. Note - We have a second example of this spoon, with a slightly clearer makers mark, see S 11464.
A pair of full figural Indian sterling silver souvenir spoons, with bowls decorated with Mudlavia, Kramer, Indiana. The spoons are a good weight at 30 grammes each, and very pleasing quality, The detail on these spoons is excellent, the Indian is carrying a bow and tomahawk, his feathered headrest hangs to his waist. The bowls feature the Mudlavia Hotel in Kramer, Indiana, once again the detail is excellent (one spoon bowl is very clear, the second has some wear and is not as crisp). Both spoons are clearly hallmarked "Sterling", they also have a Dutch duty mark V in shaped shield, this mark was used 1906-1953 on imported silver, so at some stage these spoons were imported into the Netherlands. No makers mark is present. The Mudlavia Hotel was a spa built in 1890 by Harry Kramer to use the natural spring water, it drew visitors from around the world until it burnt down in 1920. A rare Tudor pattern butter knife, made by Chawner & Co, the leading flatware maker of Victorian England. The butter knife is fabulous quality, and is in excellent condition, it has original owners engraved initials GML. The Tudor pattern is a Gothic Revival pattern, it has 2 small scroll circular projections on each side of the stem, this differentiates it from the "Straight Tudor" pattern. The butter knife is clearly hallmarked, it also has a star journeyman's mark. In addition, it also carries the British Registry design number and date chart diamond, which rarely occurs on silver flatware. The presence of the design mark indicates that Chawner registered the design to protect it being copied. Tudor is described by Pickford (Silver Flatware page 150) as "a rare Chawner & Co pattern registered August 14th 1850, along with Straight Tudor, it appears in the Chawner Pattern book (page 218). A rare and beautiful Tiffany sterling silver melon (or pickle) fork, in the Greek Handle or Greek pattern, made between 1870 and 1891. The pattern has a geometric 3 petalled flower on wavy stalk, the flowers increase in size up the handle. The bowl is long and elegant, with shaped centre tine, the handle is tubular, increasing in diameter towards the top, the end is monogrammed with script initials MEL, we assume the original owner. The fork is clearly hallmarked "Tiffany & Co M Sterling 332", the M was used by Tiffany between 1870 and 1891, to denote Edward C Moore, who headed Tiffany's silver operations. The number 332 is a pattern number. This Greek Handle pattern is extremely rare, and does not feature in many of the Tiffany flatware guides. We have noted 2 other examples, one on the Peter Cameron website, his examples include pickle forks, melon forks and fruit knives, the forks with gilded bowls, he describes this as Greek pattern, dated 1870-1875.
