A rare solid silver version of the Voortrekker Aandenking (memorial) 1838 - 1938 bowl, in 835 grade silver. The circular bowl with foot is well modeled, with ox wagons on trek, with Boer (farmer) on horse, cattle in the foreground and mountains in the background, framed by trees. The other image is of the Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria, and in between are two lit candles in a candlestick, surrounded by chains, with Zulu shields above and ox horns below. One candle reads "VOORTREKKER AANDENKING", the other "1838 - 1938". This design was done by the famous South African artist JH Pierneef (1886-1957), probably South Africa's greatest landscape artist. The hallmarks are clear, and include makers mark V over moon for Zilverfabriek Voorschoten, and 835 indicating the grade of silver (835/1000). Zilverfabriek Voorschoten is a brand name of Koninklijke Van Kempen & Begeer, founded in 1764 and still in existence today, they moved from Utrecht to Voorschoten in 1858. A Dutch silver coin box, a circular cylinder in shape, with Dutch coins set in the lid and the base. The cylinder is attractive, with detailed engraved decoration, 2 bands with a floral motif. The lid and base also have a textured gadrooned rim, which aids in opening and closing. The coin in the lid has a crowned W for Willem I of Holland, and date 1825. The coinin the base has crown over lion rampant holding sword and bushel, and denomination 10 c for ten cents, this coin is dated 1827 on the reverse in interior. The box is well made, and in excellent condition, perhaps it was intended for gambling counters. There are no hallmarks, but the coin in the lid is faintly engraved on the reverse with "B4565 over sla". One coin has the palm Brussels mint mark for GD Bourgogne Herlaer (1821-1830), the other has the mercury staff Utrecht Koninlijke Nederlandse mint mark.

An antique Dutch silver miniature horse and carriage, made in Hoorn late 19th century. The carriage is drawn by 2 prancing horses, with good detail, ropes and whip all intact. The quality is excellent, very solid, just under 100 grammes, so quite heavy for a miniature. The carriage has a driver and guard standing at the rear, and 2 passengers inside. The carriage is attractively engraved, and all 4 wheels turn perfectly. All 4 wheels are hallmarked with the Dutch dagger, used between 1814 and 1953. The carriage bar connecting to the horses also has the Dutch dagger, along with clear makers mark V.S.39, for Gebruder (Brothers) van Straten, who worked in Hoorn between 1885 and 1891 (Netherlands Responsibility Marks Since 1797, mark 20717). The Gebruder van Straten appear to have specialised in miniatures, a number are now in the collection of various museums. A rare and interesting Dutch silver matchbox holder (or cover), a memento of the destruction of the Ypres Cloth Hall (Lakenhal) during the Great War (World War I), imported and retailed by Harrod's of London. The box is embossed with a detailed image of the Great Cloth Hall in Ypres, before it's destruction during the war. The box reads "YPRES LES HALLES 1914". The gauge of silver is quite thin, and the box has been well used and damaged, 3 of the connecting arms have been repaired. The box is Dutch, and has clear Dutch hallmarks G for 1916, and makers mark VS for Vos & Co of Haarlem, Hertogenbosch. The box also has clear London import marks for 1916, and importers mark RB for Richard Burbridge, who was Managing Director of Harrods from 1911 to 1917. The Cloth Hall was first built in 1304, site of the Les Halles Market, and centre to the town of Ypres (Ieper). It was the site of many major battles during the War, first sustaining damage in 1914 but being completely destroyed by 1918. It was rebuilt between 19...

An antique Dutch silver vinaigrette (zilveren lodereindoosje) in the form of an armoire (kabinet). These have also been described as pomanders, scent boxes, and also incorrectly described as snuff boxes and peppermint boxes. The box is rectangular in shape, with an engraved armoire, complete with drawers, it also has a pierced rim on the lid. The back is decorated with an engraved flower, while the base, sides and lid have engraved wrigglework decoration. The lid is clearly hallmarked with maker mark IS under star (makers mark 10121 in the book "Netherlands Responsibility Marks since 1797") for Johannes Jacobus Smits, who worked in Schoonhoven between 1823 and 1824. The lid also has a very clear date letter O for 1823. The rim of the box also has makers mark and Minerva head office mark (duty mark). Loderein comes from the French "l'eau de reine" translated "water of the king", as only the wealthy could afford the perfumed cologne.

A Dutch antique silver miniature longcase clock (grandfather clock), this is a reproduction of an 18th century clock (staande horloges in Dutch). The clock is richly decorated, the ogee base has 3 panels with boats, a windmill and church spire with houses. The main body is decorated with flowers, foliage and scrolls, the pierced hinged door (with locking mechanism) opens to reveal a pendulum (decorative, not functional). The main clock housing has barley twist front, panelled sides, hinged front piece with clasp (zig -zag to hold glass in place), this swings upwards to allow adjustment of clock hands. The rear has a circular hinged door to access clock mechanism. The top of the clock has 2 cast reclining angels (putti), and 2 winged angels blowing horns standing either side. The central figure is missing (atlas holding a globe which we have seen on other examples). Hallmarks include lion passant (2nd standard purity 833) and makers mark JPH struck on back, Minerva duty mark with A for Amsterdam struck on the ...

A beautiful pair of antique cast silver grape scissors (zilver druifschaar in Dutch), made in Amsterdam in 1885, these are extremely good quality and a pleasing weight. The scissors have simulated vine branches, with well placed cast vine leaves and bunches of grapes, the blade portion is solid silver as well, no steel pieces. The scissors have 2 vine arms that they rest upon, so are easily accessed when being picked up, a lovely and practical design feature. The silver is 835 grade, as is usual for Dutch silver, as indicated by the lion hallmark with II below it, this hallmark easily visible on the blade. The other hallmarks are hidden in the decoration, but clearly visible, including Dutch Minerva with A for Amsterdam, date letter gothic A for 1885 and makers mark JL under 5 for Jilles Limburg, who worked between 1874 and 1900 (mark 11592 in Netherlands Responsibility Marks since 1797).

A lovely Dutch silver sugar sifter in the Empire style, made by Pieter Kuijlenburg in Schoonhoven in 1830. The sifter ladle has a wide oval curved bowl, quite deep, with a beaded rim, and intricate piercing of the bowl. The centre is an eight pointed star, with 8 radiating arrows interspersed with patterned dots, surrounded by a cross and semi circle pattern. The curved, elegant handle has a pointed terminal, it is beautifully engraved with a bright cut pattern, including stems with leaves and flowers. The Empire style is a Neo-Classical revival style, that became popular in France, Belgium and the Netherlands after the rise of Napoleon. The hallmarks include makers mark PKB under kappie for Pieter Kuijlenburg, Lion passant 2nd standard (833 purity), Minerva head duty mark, and date letter script V for 1830 (the date letter struck inside the bowl). Kuijlenburg worked in Schoonhoven as a silversmith between 1818 and 1831, he was born in 1791 and died in 1868, he had 6 children including Adrianus who was also a...

A Dutch antique silver miniature 6 light chandelier, (kaarsenkroon in Dutch) in the traditional form, with a globe under the candlestick holders intended to reflect the light of the candles. The globe holds six scrolling arms, with applied decorative loops, the sconces with 4 petals. The connecting hook has 3 segments, also with ball decoration, the bottom one fixed and the 2 upper segments have chain links. All 3 pieces of the connecting chain are hallmarked with the Dutch dagger, the chandelier itself is apparently unmarked. The Dutch dagger was used between 1814 and 1905, and indicates a minimum of 833 grade silver. Chandeliers of this form date back to the 17th century, they were also produced as Dutch silver miniatures in the 18th century (see similar example by Arnoldus van Geffen, "Tall and Small Antique Dutch Silver Miniatures, Aardewerk, page 48).
