Dutch Rococo Silver Teaspoon - Johannes Schiotling
Johannes Schiotling, Amsterdam 1794

A fabulous Dutch rococo silver teaspoon, made by the master silversmith Johannes Schiotling. The spoon has an asymmetric handle, with scrolls and foliage in C and S shaped curves. The spoon bowl is long and elegant, the drop is also asymmetric foliage. The quality and condition is excellent. The hallmarks include makers mark ISL in rectangular punch for Johannes Schiotling (1730-1799), a Swede from Gothenburg (freed 1753) who settled in Amsterdam in 1762. He specialised in rococo silver, his silver is now in numerous museum collections, including the Rijksmuseum. A portrait of Schiotling and his wife hangs in the Amsterdam museum, see below. The other hallmarks, all clear, include 934 standard mark, Amsterdam town mark and date letter K for 1794. The spoon has additional later hallmarks, Dutch dagger and makers mark AW9 for A Willemse, whoc worked between 1932 and 1941. We are not sure why these later marks are present, perhaps for inspection prior to export, we cannot find any signs of repair. Note - A Lead...

Dutch Antique Silver Miniature Toy Scale -
Jacobus van Dam, Schoonhoven C 1849-1888
$ 210.00

An interesting antique Dutch silver miniature scale, with 2 circular weighing pans mounted on 4 supports, resting on a table with a drawer with handle. Four weights of different sizes are also present, along with 2 bars, we assume lifters to move the weights. The table is rectangular, on 4 feet with a skirt, and is decorated with S shaped scrolls. The scale is 835 grade silver, typical of continental silver (and slightly lower grade than 925 sterling silver). The scale contains a number of interesting hallmarks, but as they are quite small they are difficult to decipher. The first mark is ZII, which is the Netherlands purity mark for 835 grade silver, (Tardy, International Hallmarks, pg 327). The second mark is Ad81 in a rectangular punch, this is the makers mark for Jacobus van Dam, who worked in Schoonhoven between 1849 and 1888. The 3rd mark is 835 in an oval punch (silver purity mark), the 4th mark is tiny and difficult to read, looks like "42NO". Some additional marks are present, these are indistinct, c...

Dutch Silver Hanoverian Tablespoon or Porridge Spoon - Utrecht, Sebastiaan de Mare
Sebastiaan Gijsbert de Mare, Utrecht 1805
$ 190.00

The spoon has the traditional Hanoverian central rib with turn up end, and a wide drop. The spoon has the original owners initials BI engraved on the back of the spoon, dating back to when spoons were placed on the table bowl down (with initials displayed). The spoon has 5 clear hallmarks, including an excellent makers mark of a laying deer for Sebastiaan Gijsbert de Mare, this mark is a lovely makers mark and exceptionally well struck and clear. The spoon also has the Utrecht city coat of arms mark struck twice, indicating first standard ( Grote Keur), or 925 sterling standard. The date letter is slighty obscured, we believe X for 1805 but could also be K for 1793. The final mark is the Dutch Crowned O second assay mark, quite rare as only used between 1807 and 1810, used as a re-examination mark of earlier silver when resold, or for imported articles without payment of ...

The stove is bucket shaped, circular with a swing handle, and has an engraved 6 pointed star on top, with 6 holes on each star point, and a central flower shaped hole. This is surrounded by a zig zag pattern, repeated on the sides (top and bottom), the engraving is done by hand and is a little crude. The base has one hallmark, a makers mark, Z2, for Karel Nicolaas zur Muhlen (mark 22153, in the book Netherlands Responsibility Marks since 1797).Muhlen worked between 1895 and 1905, he moved between Roosendaal, Alkmaar, Arnhem and Hertogenbosch. The handle ring is struck by the Dutch silver dagger, used between 1814 and 1953 on small items. A similar Dutch silver miniature foot stove is depicted in the book "Tall and Small, Antique Dutch Silver Miniatures by Aardewerk, item 40, this one made in 1771 in Amsterdam by Jan Bonket.

The spoon has the usual central Hanoverian rib with strong turn-up, and a very wide circular drop, and a larger bowl than is usually seen. The spoon has an original engraved family crest of a well engraved crown above a stylised X, with flowing scrolls, this is on the back of the spoon, when spoons were displayed bowl down. The spoon's main delight are it's well struck and very clear hallmarks, including makers mark of crowned tree in irregular shaped punch for Hendricus Wolterbeek (1730-1805, he worked between 1755 and 1788). Dognose Hanoverian Dutch Silver Tablefork
Bartholomeus van der Tooren, Rotterdam 1768

Early Dutch bottom-marked silver tablefork, with transitional elements from Dognose to early Hanoverian pattern. The fork has a distinct Dognose, and a very pronounced rib on the front of the fork. The fork has a double drop, with the "Hague Leaflet" (lofje), a little lip at the join of the handle, typical of flatware made in The Hague (as opposed to Amsterdam) (source Dutch Silver, pg 83, MH Gans). The fork is of good gauge, very pleasing to hold, and engraved with the initials HLZW on the back. The hallmarks are exceptionally clear, showing makers mark (triangle device), lion rampant silver guarantee mark (875), Rotterdam city mark, and date letter K for 1768. The fork also has a puzzling and rare 5th hallmark (added later), being the duty mark used in the Netherlands between 1807 and 1810, for articles of foreign manufacture without payment of duty (source Tardy, International Hallmarks on Silver, pg 317). We can only surmise the fork was re-imported into the Netherlands at that time. Thanks to information...
