Maritzburg Durban Inter-Town Shooting Competition 1892 Sterling Silver Pendant

An interesting sterling silver trophy medallion, shaped in the shape of a Zulu shield, presented annually for a shooting competition between the towns of Pietermaritzburg and Durban of Kwazulu Natal, South Africa. the medallion has 2 crossed rifles behind a smaller Zulu shield, surrounded by palm fronds with a decorative border, above latin motto and town name scrolls. The shield reads "Inter-Town Shooting presented 1892 for Annual Competition, Mayor of Maritzburg R. Mason Esq, Mayor of Durban B.W. Greenacre Esq", the scrolls have town names "Maritzburg Durban" either side, and the motto reads "Palman Qiu Meruit Ferat", translated "let whoever earns the palm bear it". The medallion has suspension rings so it can be worn as a pendant. The medallion is clearly hallmarked with South African sterling silver hallmarks, STG, SABS standard mark, date letter Gothic M for 1960, and makers mark of Dick King riding a horse for Norman Watson of Durban, South Africa. Silver WWI Cigarette Case - Military Medal, Menin Road, Red Cross, Pte Cronje

A antique silver cigarette case, presented to a South African World War I soldier who won the Military Medal for bravery displayed at Menin Road. The inscription reads "Pte. J.J. Cronje, M.M. 4 SAI, From the Ladies of the Riversdale Red + Soc:, In Appreciation of Bravery Displayed at Menin Road, June 10th 1919". Private Cronje was part of the 4th South African Infantry Regiment, part of the larger South African Brigade, best remembered for their role in the Battle of Delville Wood in 1916, but with battle honours for Egypt, Somme, Delville Wood, Arras, Ypres, Menin Road, Cambrai, Mons and Flanders. The 4th SAI was known as the "South African Scottish", as it was raised from the Cape Town Highlanders and Transvaal Scottish Regiments, with additional recruits from Caledonian societies. Riversdale is a small farming town in the Western Cape province, en route between Cape Town and the Garden Route. A beautiful Grenadier Guards Diamond, Pearl and 14 Carat gold sweetheart brooch, perfectly preserved in it's original Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Regent Street box. The brooch features the Grenadier Guard's flaming grenade, the flames portion contains 25 small diamonds set in 14 carat gold, the body of the grenade is a natural pearl, 6 mm in diameter, set in a gold striated bowl. The grenade is mounted on a gold bar brooch, with gold pin and gold safety roller catch, this is a good quality sweetheart brooch, and would have been expensive when new. No hallmarks are present, but the brooch has tested as 14 carat gold. The original box is also beautiful, leather with gold detail, the interior silk and velvet, it reads "By Appointment to H. M. The King, The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Ltd, 112 Regent St. London W". The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co became Limited in 1898, they were amalgamated into Garrard's, The Crown Jeweller's, in 1952. South African Artillery Gold and Enamel Sweetheart Brooch - WW II, Ubique

A WW II South African Artillery Regiment 9 carat gold and enamel sweetheart brooch, the detail is lovely. The brooch features a cannon under Royal crown with red enamel, with motto "UBIQUE" (everywhere) in blue enamel above cannon, and "South Africa / Suid Afrika" in blue enamel below. The brooch is clearly hallmarked 9CT for 9 carat gold, the clasp and hinge are also gold but the pin is not, it is stamped "Metal". 14 South African artillery regiments served in North Africa and Italy during the second world war.

Royal Flying Corps Gold Pilots Wing Sweetheart Brooch - The Great War

A RFC (Royal Flying Corps) 9 carat gold pilot's wing sweetheart brooch, dating back to the Great War (World War I). The RFC logo between two feathered wings is mounted on a slender bar (also 9 carat gold), which is clearly hallmarked J.F for James Fenton of Birmingham, and 9CT for nine carat gold. The hinge and clasp are also gold, the pin is not. This brooch also has a suspension ring with gold chain and gold safety pin, to prevent the brooch being lost. This brooch is quite small and light, but still a rare and lovely item. The RFC was established in 1912, and in 1918 it was merged with the Royal Naval Air Service to form the Royal Air Force (RAF), so only existed for 6 years. 11 RFC members received the Victoria Cross during the War, mortality rates for pilots was extremely high.

A 9 Carat gold World War II Transvaal Scottish Volunteers Regiment Sweetheart brooch, with motto " Alba nam Buadh (Scotland, Home of the Virtues), in full working order. The brooch is lovely quality, with 2 tones of gold (yellow and red), set on a bar brooch. The back of the brooch is engraved "MOIRA 12/6/42", and both the brooch and the clasp are clearly hallmarked 9CT for nine carat gold. The Transvaal Scottish Regiment was established by John Murray, 7th Earl of Atholl, in 1902 at the end of the Anglo Boer War, it still exists today. During World War 2 when this brooch was presented, the regiment fought mostly in North and East Africa, notably at El Alamein.

Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) Gold Sweetheart Brooch

A REME (Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers) Regimental 9 carat gold Sweetheart Brooch. The badge depicts a horse rearing with a coronet around its neck, linked via a chain to a globe the horse is standing on. Behind the horse there is a lightning flash, which symbolises electrical engineering while the globe stands for the world-wide role of the unit. The chained horse symbolises power under control. The badge is completed with the British Royal Crown. The flash and crown are clearly hallmarked 9 carat yellow gold, the horse is a much lighter colour, we assume it is white gold. The hinge, pin and safety clasp are also yellow gold. The brooch also has a gold suspension ring behind the lightning flash, possibly for another form of attachment. The brooch is clearly hallmarked for Birmingham 1967, 9 carat gold and has makers mark W.O.L, they worked between 1953 and 1970 but are currently un-identified, possibly W.O. Lewis. This badge is described by members of the REME as "a horse dropping a bollock".

A South African Medical Corps WW II gold sweetheart brooch, mounted on a bar brooch. The badge features the rod of Aesculapius with a serpent entwined round it, head uppermost and looking left, all within a laurel wreath, under a Royal crown, the same badge as used by the Royal Medical Corps. The Scroll below reads "S.A.M.C / S.A.G.D.", translated in Afrikaans the Suid Afrikaanse Geneeskunige Diens. The brooch is clearly hallmarked 9CT for 9 carat gold, the swivel clasp securely fastens the pin.

Durban Light Infantry Gold and Enamel Sweetheart Brooch - WW II, Blue Enamel

A World War II 9 carat gold and enamel sweetheart brooch for the Durban Light Infantry Regiment of South Africa. The brooch features the infantry bugle with tassles under the Royal crown. The brooch has 2 colours of enamel, red in the crown and blue for the letters DLI, the gold has 2 tones, this is a lovely quality brooch. The clasp has a swivel locking mechanism to keep it safely fastened. the brooch is clearly hallmarked 9CT for nine carat gold. The George VI crown shows this dates to WW II, the DLI fought in North Africa and Italy (including El Alamein and Monte Cassino). The regiment was founded in 1854, and still exists today, they were called the Royal Durban Light Infantry between 1935 and 1961 when South Africa became a Republic.

Durban Light Infantry Sterling Silver Trophy Spoon - R.S.M White, Natal Schools Cadet Corps

An interesting antique silver military spoon, awarded as a shooting trophy. The spoon is Fiddle pattern, dessert size, this is a good quality spoon. The spoon is beautifully engraved with an interesting crest, quartered with rampant lions, leopard's heads and chevrons, with central bugle, below a plant (leek?) star and crown, and above DLI (we assume Durban Light Infantry?). The spoon is also engraved "WON BY R.S.M. WHITE (N.S.C.C.)" - for Regimental Sargeant Major White, we assume the Natal Schools Cadet Corps. We have not been able to positively identify the crest, all hep most welcome, DLI could also be Dublin or Durham Light Infantry. The spoon has very clear hallmarks.

1st Manchester Regiment Antique Silver Cigarette Case - Captain Newbigging

An antique silver cigarette case, presented to Captain and Adjutant W.P.E. Newbigging of the 1st Manchester Regiment in 1894. The case is rectangular, with a gilded interior, with a very good quality spring loaded clasp, which is still in perfect working order. The case is engraved "W.P.E. Newbigging, 1st Manchester Regiment" on the exterior, and is also engraved in script on the interior "Biggins, from T.T., 1894", we assume Biggins was his nickname. The hallmarks are very clear on both lid and base. Zimmermans (Arthur & John) worked from 1889 until their liquidation in 1929. William Patrick Eric Newbigging was an interesting character, born in Bengal, India in 1871, son of Lt. Colonel William Newbigging of the Manchester Regiment, so he followed his father's footsteps. He co-authored a book entitled "Rough Diary of the Doings of the 1st Battn. Manchester Regt. During the South African War 1899-1902", with Major Marden. RAF 15 Carat Gold and Enamel Sweetheart Brooch

A lovely 15 carat gold and enamel RAF (Royal Air Force) sweetheart brooch, with very good detail. This is very pleasing quality, it would have been an expensive item when first made. The brooch has RAF in red enamel under a red enamel crown, above a green enamel laurel wreath, all set in gold, with the feathered wings either side. In addition to the attachment pin, the brooch has a fine gold safety pin and chain, for added security, to prevent the brooch being lost. The back is clearly stamped "15", indicating 15 carat gold, which was a British Commonwealth standard until it was discontinued in 1932 (hence our dating the brooch between 1918 when the RAF was established and 1932).

A beautiful sterling silver and blue enamel dish, with a stylised viking ship complete with vikings, spears, shields and a fish. The dish is sterling silver with engraved rim, which reads "AIR VICE MARSHAL L.O. BROWN, C.B., C.B.E., D.S.C., A.F.C. DEC. 1943 - NOV. 1944, FROM NORWEGIAN PERSONNEL OF No. 132 (N) WING". The enamelling is fabulous quality, different tones of blue with different, intricate patterns, the pattern is also raised. The base is clearly hallmarked "DAVID-ANDERSEN NORWAY STERLING". Air Vice Marshal Leslie Brown was a South African who served with the Royal Air Force (RAF) in both World Wars, he was born in 1893 and died in 1978. He commanded 84 Group during the Allied advance across Noth West Europe. 132 Wing consisted of 2 Norwegian Squadrons (331 and 332) flying fighter spitfires, formed by exiled Norwegian pilots, they fought with distinction first with Fighter Command in the Battle of Britain and later with D-Day, the liberation of Holland and crossing the Rhine, as part of 84 Group und...

A Boer War silver Gentleman in Khaki (originally Kharki) sugar tongs, made in 1899 to support fundraising for the 2nd Anglo Boer War. The tongs have the cast image on both arms, the "Gentleman in Khaki beneath crown, with "JUSTITIA" above and "Souvenir" below. The tongs are not engraved. The hallmarks for London 1899 are clear, with makers mark GJ over DF for George Jackson and David Fullerton of Josiah Williams & Co of Bristol, one of the leading flatware manufacturers of the period. The Gentleman in Khaki, wounded but defiant, stands stalwart against the foe, with his head bandaged, this image by Richard Caton Woodville became associated with Kipling's Absent Minded Beggar poem, written for the Daily Mail to raise funds for the war fund (described as unprecedently successful, raising over GBP 250000).

Natal Rifle Association Semper Paratus Sterling Silver Napkin Trophy Rings - Emma Thresh, Murray-Smith Memorial

Two sterling silver napkin rings, both shooting trophies for the Natal Rifle Association. The first reads "The Emma Thresh Trophy, 1914, 2nd Prize, won by" surrounding the engraved badge of the NRA, reading "Natal Rifle Association, Semper Paratus, 1868", around a mounted rifleman. We assume the award of this trophy was cancelled due the the start of World War I in 1914. The second reads "Murray-Smith Memorial, 1926, 1st Team", alongside an applied cast shield of the Natal Rifle Association, as described above. The hallmarks are clear on both napkin rings, the first has an additional hallmark "6" in a quatrefoil punch, all suggestions welcome as to the meaning of this additional punch. The Emma Thresh Trophy itself belongs to the Natal Carbineers, South Africa's senior regiment. The trophy itself is 16 kilograms of silver, and was donated in 1903 by Emma Thresh, as the shooting trophy for Colonial Forces. South African National Rifle Association Dewar Shield Sterling Silver Napkin Ring

An interesting solid silver napkin ring, awarded as 2nd prize in the Dewar Shield of 1939 by SANRA (South African National Rifle Association). The ring is rectangular in shape, with but with lobed sides, so a pleasing shape, it is quite heavy at 55 grammes, the quality is excellent. The napkin ring has applied crest of the South African National Rifle Association, a jumping springbok under crossed rifles, above a laurel wreath, with SANRA above and SANS below (Afrikaans equivalent). The ring is engraved "The Dewar Shield, 1939, 2nd Prize". The silver hallmarks are clear, including maker mark for Charles Green & Co, who worked between 1904 and 1986.

A lovely 9 carat gold and enamel RAF (Royal Air Force) sweetheart brooch, with very good detail. This is very pleasing quality, it would have been an expensive item when first made. The brooch has RAF in red gold under a red enamel crown, above a green enamel laurel wreath, all set in gold, with the feathered yellow gold wings either side. The contrast between the red gold RAF and yellow gold wings is lovely, set off by the red and green enamel. The back is clearly hallmarked "9 CARAT", indicating 9 carat gold. The badge and both clasp connectors are 9 carat gold, the pin itself is a whiter colour so may not be gold.

Indian Colonial 9 Carat Gold Military Sweetheart Brooch - Elephant, Assaye, Royal Highland Fusiliers, Hamilton & Co.

An interesting Indian Colonial 9 carat gold sweetheart brooch, featuring a well modelled cast elephant and battle honour ASSAYE. The brooch is good quality, and the original gold pin and clasp in full working order. The brooch is clearly hallmarked, makers mark H&CoLD, and 9Ct for nine carat gold. This makers mark was used by Hamilton & Co, the "Garrards of India", between 1926 when they became a limited company and 1936 when they introduced date letters. The battle of Assaye was a major battle of the Second Anglo-Maratha War fought between the Maratha Empire and the British East India Company in 1803, the future Duke of Wellington commanded the British, he "considered Assaye the finest thing he ever did in the way of fighting even when compared to his later military career" - Wikipedia. He had 2 horses shot under him during the battle. A 15 carat gold and enamel RAF (Royal Air Force) sweetheart brooch, with red and green enamel, perfectly preserved in it's original leather and silk box. The only hallmark present is 15CT for fifteen carat gold. The box is lovely, and reads "Royal Appointment, Gieves Ltd, 21 Old Bond St London W1". Gieves is now Gieves and Hawkes after the acquisition of Hawkes in 1974, they hold Royal Warrants for the Royal Family and the Prince of Wales, now at 1 Savile Row.
